The need to plan ahead for the growth of a business

16 May 2019

It’s an exciting moment for any business that’s been built from the ground up; the company is flourishing, and you need a bigger space to continue to grow. If your company is ready to upgrade its office space, it’s important to make a plan for this continuous growth and review your initial business plan.

Review

The fact you’re enjoying success enough to consider an office move suggests you had set up a smart business plan way back at the beginning of your business. Well, it’s time to take another look at this plan, and update it to reflect any changes to your business’ needs and outlook. Questions to consider include:

  • Is your business description accurate? Does it still cover the next 12 to 24 months for your business?
  • Have key personnel changed? Have the skills and qualification of managerial level staff increased?
  • Does the voice match how your business’ brand has developed?
  • Does the plan include this new expansion?
    • Be sure to add in the steps you are going to need to take to grow your business from here on out, such as moving to a new site or hiring new employees.

You also need to create a plan before deciding on your new office location, of course. Basics to consider include:

  • Who needs to be involved?
    • Or, more accurately, who would be beneficial in being involved?
  • What do you need from your location?
    • A fancy office is all well and good, but if it’s not easy for your staff and clients to get to, then it’s more trouble than it’s worth.
    • Does it have ample commuting links?
  • What is your budget, including any fees, insurance costs, and fit-out spends?
  • Is the potential new office going to help support your company’s environmental goals?

Moving

With your new space found, it’s time to plan how you’re going to move everything over from your old office. It is worth taking the time to de-clutter your office at this stage to ensure nothing is taken with you that doesn’t need to be there.

With your new space found, it’s time to plan how you’re going to move everything over from your old office. It is worth taking the time to de-clutter your office at this stage to ensure nothing is taken with you that doesn’t need to be there.

  • Clear away and old files. Or, scan them for digital back-ups, and then shred and recycle the hard copies where possible.
  • Old furniture can be donated or recycled.

Before all your employees head in for their first day in the new office, be sure to take a day to test everything. Some teething problems can’t be avoided, but major outages can cause days of grief and slowdown for your company.

On the big day itself, a nice touch for your employees would be a little welcome pack on their desks for when they arrive. This could take the form of a small welcome note, any key information they might need about their new office, and a little perk such as a free coffee token for the local café.

Feedback after the move

After a couple days, it is beneficial to ask your employees for feedback on the new office space. What are they loving about the new space, and what do they feel could be utilised better? After all, some things may not come to light until the office space is really put to work.

Moving to a new office is a huge step in business — make sure it is a positive and beneficial one with preparation and planning!
